Unreciprocated Salaam

Some things are simple.  But there is a way in which complacency, culture, and prejudice can effect our iman in seemingly “small” ways.  Having moved to a community where there are a plethora of Muslims, I have observed that even giving salaam is sometimes perceived as strange–perhaps something only reserved for one’s family, own ethnic group, people you see at masjid?  I dont know but its a problem. How can we be unified as a community if we cannot respond to a simple yet powerful greeting?  Why must Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh (Peace be unto you and so may the mercy of Allah and His blessings) be met with silence, elicit a snicker, or worse a dirty look?  Can we continue to greet our brothers and sisters in Islam even if we assume that it will not be returned?  Should we allow other people’s bad habits to affect our own practice and will this be a valid excuse?

Is Giving the Greeting (Salam) Obligatory or Recommended?
